Four years after he swept to office at the head of a wave of mass street protests against rampant political corruption and widespread poverty in the former Soviet Republic, Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili is now himself the target of angry demonstrations and allegations of electoral fraud.

The fall-from grace of this self-styled champion of the people mirrors that of the other leaders of CIA-backed “peoples power” revolutions in Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan which also ended in disillusionment for the masses.

Still, despite numerous poll irregularities the EU and US observers monitoring the Georgian presidential election all insist that yesterday’s vote was a “triumphant step” for democracy!
